Datchet hosted newly promoted Cove 2s on Saturday who have the curious position of playing in the adjacent league to their 1st eleven. It was not long into the Cove innings when they may have hoped that they were playing in the adjacent league, as James Lambert bowling with great control produced a flurry of wickets which brought Cove to 50-3. He was ably supported by Andrew ' the juggernaut' Dick who trudged into the wind for 11 long overs. The captain must take some of the blame for the choice of ends, as the pea headed James Lambert could have used this natural asset to cut through the gail blowing over the ground. Instead Datchet took pleasure in watching AD run in, like Ian Austin in a wind tunnel.
The Datchet bowling attack was unrecognizable from its previous league outing and the change of bowling bought further wickets with James Dick and Luke Shepherd also picking up important scalps. Datchet continued to build pressure which was key to their success throughout the day with Sam Finn completing the professional bowling performance. Datchet had heeded the warnings of the previous week and fielded and bowled like a side capable of big things restricting Cove to 159 all out from 49.5overs.
Datchet required a steady start to prevent any possibility of a slip up and that is precisely what was produced. Nick Tilley and Mark George strode to the wicket with some intent and swiftly reached the 50 mark. The opening partnership was much like the fabled Tortoise and Hare story with Tilley punishing the loose bowling and George showing resolute defense in a 'wall' like innings. When Tilley departed for 48 George had nearly moved into double figures and continued to frustrate the Cove bowlers with a selection of defensive nudges and blocks. Nevertheless George's calming innings was invaluable to the Datchet cause as it has been for most post war seasons.
Datchet continued to push towards the target with Alldis and the Jones brothers making small but significant contributions. Datchet reached the total 4 wickets down with George 48 not out and deservedly take 40 points to Marlow on Saturday.
Datchet will however be without stalwart Mark George who is off to watch some paint dry for the weekend, which will save the first team members from the same fate. The away game should also signal the return to bowling for Tilley who has been nursing an injured finger, and the introduction of South African, Ryan Lancefield.
