The firsts entertained Beaconsfield on Saturday on what would prove to be a scorcher at the Wally Gage Memorial Ground. The wicket had an M25 feel to it and it was clear that the toss would be all important with the deck and the weather conspiring against the loser.
Unfortunately it was Tilley who proved the lesser tosser (unusually) and his Datchet side were asked to field. Datchet made early inroads with some good bowling from Andrew Dick. However, the fates seemed set against Datchet as only 10 overs in to the game the swinging new ball was hit out of the ground and its replacement did not deviate for the remainder of the innings.
Beaconsfield batted well in the favourable conditions and their opener Rawlinson quickly raced to 100 in conjunction with their number 4 Sherry. All the DCC bowlers were put to the sword with only Tilley putting the brakes on for a short period. The second spells from Lambert, James Dick and Andrew Dick proved more successful but Beaconsfield declared on an imposing 335 – 7.
Datchet whose strength lies in their batting did not see the total as insurmountable and remained positive during the tea interval. Although with the early loss of both Tilley and George the task was made all the more difficult. In form Alldis and A. Jones set about the run chase with great aplomb and Datchet were in with a real shout until the removal of Alldis (77) and A. Jones in successive overs. The chase continued with 'Fastfood' Jones and Oram making solid progress, but the fall of their wickets slowed the chase and Datchet capitulated to 262 all out.
Lancefield's cameo innings of 30 from number seven is worthy of mention but their were few positives to take from what was a very disappointing result for Datchet. The baggy greens will look to bounce back next week at the Galatasaray of cricket grounds - Bagshot.
