Datchet traveled to Hounslow which was strange as they were the visitors to Chiswick and Latymer CC. Having frequented Royal Ascot on Friday, one or two of the Datchet squad were bleary eyed but eager for victory. The Datchet skipper Nick Tilley, won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a sporting wicket, that would break up as the day progressed.
The early loss of Luke Shepherd brought a natural comedian back to the pavilion and sent a mercurial batsmen in Tim Alldis to the wicket. It would be Alldis and the evergreen George who would build the foundation for the Datchet innings, both batting with some style on what was a testing wicket from the off. Alldis plundered the attack striking several boundaries and George worked the ball round with the odd flourish to stop the crowd from nodding off. When drinks came George had already reached fifty, but this was mainly due to drinks break being late rather than George upping his strike rate.
When Alldis departed and George followed shortly after, a middle order collapse ensued. The ship was steadied by debutant Van Ryswyck who batted with great aplomb, strking a huge six to the delight of the onlooking spectators. He was ably supported by Sam Finn, who had dropped down the order as a result of not fulfilling his quota of spectators. Datchet's innings closed on 227 all out which seemed a par score on what was an indifferent wicket.
Chiswick's innings began well with the opening pair batting with great fluency against first the old ball, and then the new. It was not until the introduction of Van Ryswyck, Finn and Lancefield, that the runs were stemmed and wickets began to fall. All bowled with controlled variation and a glimmer of 25 points was on the horizon for Datchet. The reintroduction of James Dick bought further wickets and as Chiswick continued to chase the runs the prospect of a result looked possible. All the bowlers were supported by some excellent catching, with Alldis in particular taking two fantastic steeplers! The headline not referring to any personal health issues for the hard hiting lefthander!
However Chiswick would hold on and ended up 217-9 with Datchet having only an over and a half at the final pair. In short an adequate performance by Datchet, but possibly one that they will look back on with regret at the end of the season. Positives of the day were that JP Van Ryswyck performed excellently on debut, R. Lancefield announced himself as the Sultan of Swing and Royal Ascot is only once a year.
Datchet welcome back Thomas Jones (from a tour of the countries KFCs) and James Lambert (from a tour of future wedding venues) for their trip to Basingstoke who sit in second place in the league.
